Adventures Camp Director (Seasonal)

Iredell County Parks and Recreation is seeking a qualified individual to serve as the Camp Director in an established adventure-based day camp program for youth ages 11-13. Iredell County Parks and Recreation is seeking a qualified individual to serve as the Camp Director in an established day camp program for children age 5-11. Camps (Seasonal): Working with children ages 11-13 in a day camp program. Positions are in effect from late May through August, with weekends off.  This includes staff training (some evenings after 4pm in late May & early June), and 8 weekly camp sessions (2022: June 13th – August 12th). During sessions, camp staff typically work Monday-Friday, for approximately 10 hours per day, usually between the hours of 7am-6pm (start/end times may vary). Positions may be available for winter or spring camp programs also (TBD).

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director is responsible for the overall on-site management and program implementation. Specific duties include: managing and working with 2 seasonal staff members, directing the implementation of camp activities and maintaining adherence to the camp schedule, managing daily records, maintaining a weekly operating budget (to include payments & receipt management), and assisting in pre-program planning/preparation with the Program Specialist. Position also includes the duties of a camp instructor/driver, such as transportation to/from sites via operation of a 15-passenger van, leading/implementing daily activities for the campers (such as games, environmental activities, swimming, hikes, etc), camper supervision, behavior management, and customer communication. Includes daily record keeping, maintaining a clean work environment, good relations with the public and other staff members, the safety and welfare of campers, maintaining camp morale and a motivated atmosphere, as well as other duties assigned by the director/coordinator. Contacts and/or meets with the Program Specialist on a regular basis for camp progress and updates. May have other duties assigned by the Program Specialist. 

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Must be at least 21 years old (High School Graduate or equivalent). Must have a valid North Carolina Driver’s License and a good driving record, reliable transportation to/from the work site(s), and proficiency in transporting passengers in county-owned 15-passenger vans (training can be provided). First Aid and CPR Certified (or willing to obtain through training). Preference is given to applicants with good swimming ability, and experience in the following areas: working with youth in a group setting, staff/group management and supervision, and camp programming and implementation (field trips, games, hiking, swimming, etc.). Ideal candidates will also have experience/familiarity with adventure-based activities (canoeing, rafting, hiking, ropes challenge course/climbing, etc) and driving a 15-passenger van (or other high occupancy vehicle). Must be reliable, punctual, and work well with others. Position requires good judgment to assure that camp is run safely and efficiently.

SALARY RANGE:  $14.50 per hour / DOE
