Lifeguard I
GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
A Lifeguard is responsible for the general supervision and safety of patrons at the Iredell County Recreation Center and responding to emergencies. Lifeguards are superior swimmers who are able to give advice on water safety to patrons, conduct swift water rescues and control unruly behavior if necessary.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND TASKS
Maintain constant surveillance of patrons in the water.
Provide emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
Able to act quickly and appropriately to secure the safety of patrons in the event of an emergency.
Present professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintain a high standard of customer service.
Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Properly maintain facility cleanliness
Enforce facility rules
Prepare and maintain appropriate activity reports.
Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures.
Able to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
RECRUITMENT SELECTION AND GUIDELINES
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Ability to work on weekends and evenings
Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
Highly-skilled in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques
Strong knowledge of CPR and emergency medical procedure and current CPR/First Aid certification
Ability to accurately prepare routine administrative paperwork
Excellent customer service skills
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to perform active work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally.
Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, to operate a computer, and to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
Exposure to pool chemicals, including chlorine
DESIRABLE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Two (2) or more years of Lifeguard experience preferred.
Have or obtain a valid American Red Cross Lifeguard/ CPR/ First Aid/ AED Certification:
- Swim 300 yards (12 laps).
- 2 minute tread without using arms for support.
- Surface dive and recover a brick from at minimum 6 feet, and swim backwards the length of the pool to the wall in less than 1 minute 40 seconds.
- Must be able to perform water rescues on victims of any weight and height.
