COURIER – PART TIME

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE: Under general supervision, the Courier will drive a county vehicle and is responsible for daily delivery, pick-up and distribution of library materials to Iredell-Statesville Schools ADR Center, Iredell Charter Academy, Harmony Branch Library, and Troutman Branch Library. Position is responsible for transporting secured funds and deposits weekly from the branch libraries to the main library. In addition to couriering materials, performs specialized clerical work sorting and shelving returned books and assisting library users in locating items. Reports to the Circulation Supervisor. Employee must exercise independent judgment in completing assigned tasks. Employee must also exercise considerable tact and courtesy in contact with patrons and the public. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Pick up from the main branch and deliver library materials daily to assigned locations. Pick up secured deposits weekly from library branches and deliver to main library. Pick up library materials from assigned locations and deliver to main library. Must be able to follow directions and manage timely deliveries. Must be able to follow a strict schedule. Perform monthly fire extinguisher checks at library branches. Returns books and other library materials to shelves ensuring they are arranged neatly and in accordance with library procedures using the Dewey Decimal System. Reads shelves for accuracy and re-shelves misplaced items. Locates and retrieves library materials for staff or patrons upon request which may include use of computers. Completes a minimum of 20 hours of professional development each fiscal year. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS: Assists Circulation department checking in library materials and covering for breaks and fills in at other locations and departments when needed. Performs related tasks as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES: Working knowledge of computers, printers and other equipment in the Library, and ability to use them in the performance of duties. Working knowledge of basic Library procedures. Ability to interact with the public, volunteers and library staff and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with them and with other county employees. Ability to perform a variety of tasks with frequent interruptions. Ability to type and operate a computer with accuracy. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE “REQUIREMENTS”: Graduation from High School including or supplemented by courses in office practices and some related clerical experience, including some experience working with the public and some experience working in a Library or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver’s License with a good driving record is required. Must have a good since of direction and excellent time management skills. This position works 19 hours per week, typically Monday – Friday between 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. ADDITIONAL “REQUIREMENTS”: NONE. “PREFERRED” QUALIFICATIONS: NONE.
